Anderson + Bohlander worked with Insight Development Corporation in 2015 to develop a landscape plan for the Barton Annex building that would achieve the present days needs of the site and residents while also setting the stage for future goals to include a public green space for the surrounding Mass Ave Cultural District. Future planning for the site may have been the catalyst for the design, but the Client first needed to make some basic improvements to the existing site to improve parking and accessibility. A single loaded parking lot spanning the site was consolidated to the southern half of the site and reconfigured to add additional parking and a curbless drop off area for the senior residents. The design also made efforts to better define the pedestrian and vehicular zones and to establish an accessible route between the Barton Annex facility and the Millikan on Mass development across the street. New improvements were included that created a dedicated outdoor amenity space on the south side of the building where many residents of the senior community would congregate during the day to take advantage of the shade from two existing sycamore trees. New tables and chairs with umbrellas were included, as well as an upgraded ADA accessible horseshoe pit. The repetition of site materials, fixtures, and furnishings were provided that would provide continuity between the two campuses that had not previously existed
